The government has extended again the bid submission deadline inviting request of proposals (RfP) to purchase of 250 megawatts (MW) electricity from Indian sponsor by one week to June 18, said officials.
This is the fifth extension of the bid submission deadline for purchase of electricity from Indian sponsor for a period of around 15 years.
The initial deadline was February 12, 2015. This tendering is, however, the second one to purchase electricity from Indian sponsors under long term basis as the initial tender floated in June last year could not attract any bidder.
State-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) floated the tender aiming to start buying this electricity from June.
The BPDB sought to select the sponsor, having the capacity of exporting 250 MW of electricity to Bangladesh, and asked the interested bidders to submit technical and commercial and tariff proposals.
The BPDB will ink a power purchase deal with the successful bidder, and the tenure of the agreement can be extended further on mutual understanding.
The eligible Indian company must have experience in trading of the minimum 250MW of electricity, as per the tender term.
The trading company would include tariff escalation as per the rules of Indian Central Energy Regulatory Commission (CERC) and include per unit electricity price through US dollar.
India's potential gas or coal-based power plant owners, suppliers or traders have been invited to submit bids to supply 250 MW of electricity to Bohrompur substation at Murshidabad in India, a senior BPDB official said.
The selected sponsor will be required to supply power up to Bohrompur substation at 400 KV (kilo volt) level.
The power will be transferred to Bheramara grid substation in Kushtia by the Power Grid Company of India (PGCI) and the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB).
The BPDB official said Bangladesh will purchase 250 MW electricity directly from Indian sponsors apart from currently importing of around 450 MW from the India.
The country's overall electricity generation is now hovering around 7,300 MW against the demand for over 8,500 MW.
The government has a target to augment electricity generation to 20,000 mw by 2021.
Officials said the imported electricity will help ease Bangladesh's power supply shortage. It will also help establish a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) electricity grid.
