Prices of coarse rice, onion, few vegetable items declined on Friday compared to that of its previous week due to increase in supply from the hubs.
Coarse varieties of rice like Swarna, BR-11 was sold at Tk34-36 per kg on the day which was Tk36-38 per kg seven days back.
Import of Swarna variety from India and entrance of a good number of rice laden trucks from the border areas helped reduce the price level, said many traders.
But, prices of middle and finer quality like Najirshail, Miniket, Brridhan-28, Paijam, Brridhan-29 (known as Huski) prices remained the same maintaining the higher trend.
Md Alamin, a trader at Badamtoli in the city said a good chunk of imported rice has flooded the Dhaka markets.
The vehicles which are carrying imported goods are getting high security, he said.
He said importers are specifically importing Swarna variety through Benapole port following lower price of the variety in India.
"The price of other varieties will also mark fall if the political condition becomes normal. The disruption in transportation between Northern region and Dhaka has caused hike in prices of other varieties," he said.
Price of onion, which jumped to Tk50-52 (local) last week eased to Tk40-44 per kg on Friday as the new harvested product entered the city from Faridpur region, said traders.
The increase in supply of local onion also helped reduce Indian and Burmese varieties.
Foreign onion was sold at Tk32-36 per kg on the day, a Tk4-6 reduction in a week.
Narayan Chandra Saha, a spice trader and importer at Shyambazar in the city said that newly harvested Faridpuri variety hit the market recently.
He said although transport cost is still high, but prices at the farm level reduced which helped ease the price.
