The prices of broiler and layer chickens have marked a fall by around Tk 10 per kilogram over the last few days due to heavy rainfall and flood in different areas of the country, industry insiders said.

The price of per kilogram broiler was Tk 150 to Tk 155 while a kg of layer chicken was Tk 160 to Tk 170 in the kitchen markets of the capital Monday.

The price of per kg broiler chicken was Tk 160 to Tk 165 and per kg layer chicken was Tk 170 to Tk 180 a week back.

Paragon Poultry Ltd managing director Moshiur Rahman said: "The price of one kg broiler chicken came down to Tk 110 to 115 per kg, a fall by around Tk 10 per kg at farm level recently."

"The price fall is attributed to continuous rainfall in some districts that inundated the poultry farms in the affected areas."  Mr Rahman, also the convenor of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC) said: "The farmers in low- lying areas were forced to shut down their farms due to inundation. These flood affected farmers are selling their broilers and layers as early as possible. Some of them are selling their layers in the name of broiler."

He said generally the price of broiler and layer comes down one week earlier of Eid-ul-Azha but this year it happened much earlier due to natural calamity.

Bangladesh Poultry Khamar Rokkha Jatiya Parishad general secretary Khandker Mohammad Mohsin said: "The demand for broiler and layer meat is around 2.5 to 2.6 million kilograms per day. Sometimes the demand becomes double."

"The production of broiler and layer meat is around 2.6 to 2.7 million per kg day," he added.
