Migrant worker issue

Probe body gets more time

FE REPORT | June 13, 2024 00:00:00

The probe committee, formed by expatriates' welfare ministry, has been given five more working days to find the reasons why a large number of workers could not go to Malaysia.

A six-member investigation committee was formed on June 02 to inspect those responsible for their failure to send workers to Malaysia before the May 31 deadline.

"The investigation committee has sought some time, and we've given them five more working days," said state minister for expatriates' welfare and overseas employment Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury.

He said this while talking to the media in Dhaka city on Tuesday.

"So far, 3,000 workers have complained to the committee for their failure to go to Malaysia. We'll review the probe report after Eid-ul-Azha holidays," cited the minister.

The Southeast Asian country closed its door to foreign workers, including Bangladeshis, on May 31.

According to the ministry, a total of 16,970 workers with clearances from the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) were unable to go to Malaysia within the deadline.

"Our investigation committee is working on the issue. We'll take action as per the report," said Mr Chowdhury.

"Although the time ends, applications are still coming from workers. So, we are allowing the entries."

Mr Chowdhury said, "We're taking reports from the Malaysian immigration and also from the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA). So, it's taking some time."

"We want an unbiased report," he commented. However, the committee opened an email '[email protected]' for receiving complaints from the workers who failed to go to Malaysia until June 08.

They also can contact 01924277083 and 01715228307 to make their complaints and send necessary documents through WhatsApp.
