Project seeks Tk 3.15b for quake-resistance

The government is set to increase variation contract price to over Tk 3.15 billion for setting up shock transmission unit (STU) and POT bearings of the Moghbazar- Mouchak flyover project, official said.

The local government engineering division is going to send a proposal to increase the variation contract price to the cabinet division for approval by the cabinet committee on public purchase.

The cabinet committee meeting is likely to be held on December 28.

"The construction cost has been increased due to setting up of POT bearings and STU on the flyover," an official of the division told the FE.

He said the individual design of every single foundation of the flyover has to be redesigned due to underground utilities lines that prompted to increase number and size of piles.

Besides, as per the BUET suggestions, setting up of POT bearings and STU for resisting earthquake and increase in VAT and tax have also led to increase in the variation price of the flyover.

There are 132 KV high-voltage electric lines, gas pipe, storm water and sewerage lines and BTCL and fibre optic cables have been set up underground of the flyover.

POT bearings are suitable for high loads, displacements and rotations and basically consist of an elastomeric pad restrained in a metallic pot.

They can be designed and manufactured, according to International Standards BS5400, AASHTO or AS5100.4.

STU is basically a device connecting separate structural units. It is characterised by its ability to transmit short-term impact forces between connecting structures while permitting long-term movements on the structures.

If two separate structures are linked together to resist dynamic loads, it is very difficult to connect them structurally with due allowance for long-term movements due to temperature variation and shrinkage effect.

Instead, large forces would be generated between the structures. However, with the use of shock transmission unit, it can cater to short-term transient loads while allowing long-term movements with negligible resistance.

It will benefit the bridge structures by acting as a temporary link between the structures to share and transfer the transient loads.

The cabinet committee on public purchase approved the main cost proposal of the flyover on October 17, 2012.

The estimated total cost for construction of the flyover is over Tk 12.19 billion.

Once the price variation proposal is accepted/ granted by the cabinet committee on public purchase, then it will substantially increase the traffic carrying capacity of Dhaka metropolitan areas especially at Banglamotor, Moghbazar and Mouchak.

The construction work of four-lane Moghbazar- Mouchak flyover (2.208 kilometre) is expected to be complete by June 2017.
