Proper use of Zakat stressed

Speakers at a seminar urged the affluent people of the society to give Zakat properly for the benefit of the poor and the country's economic development.

The call came at a seminar on "Exploring Potential of Zakat and its Institutionalised Management" held in the city on Saturday.

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Center for Zakat Management (CZM) jointly organised the seminar. DCCI president Mohammad Shahjahan Khan delivered the address welcome.

Chairman of DCCI Foundation and Anwar Group of Industries Anwar Hossain was present as the chief guest.

DCCI president stressed the need for proper utilisation of zakat for poverty alleviation, economic development and improving standard of living of the poor.   

"We've to ensure proper utilisation of Zakat fund for poverty alleviation, economic development and standard of living," he said.

He laid emphasis on strengthening zakat management and institutions to alleviate poverty from the society.   

"We need to strengthen zakat management activities and institutions. If zakat is collected properly, poverty will be alleviated from the society and it has a positive impact on our economy," he said.    

Chairman of DCCI Foundation and Anwar Group of Industries Anwar Hossain said the Allah has made zakat mandatory for the srich Muslims, considering it an effective tool for poverty alleviation.

 "We've to collect and manage zakat in a planned manner. Poor relatives and well-acquainted persons should get priority for giving zakat," he said.

"If we can utilise zakat properly, we can alleviate poverty from the society," Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CZM Dr. Mohammad Ayub Miah said.

He said that CZM institutionally manages zakat fund for giving stipend to the poor students. They also do some social activities with the zakat fund like financing poor people, providing vocational training to the poor women.

He called upon the business people to give their zakat to CZM so that they can use it collectively for poverty alleviation.   

Associate Professor of International Islamic University, Chittagong Moktar Hossain also spoke on the occasion. Senior Vice President of DCCI Osama Taseer gave vote of thanks.
