The Public Accounts Committee on Thursday recommended realising the outstanding telephone bills of Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) amounting to Tk 27 million from various agencies and individuals within 30 days, reports UNB.
The committee recommended disconnecting the phone lines and enforcement of the Public Demand Recovery Act 1913, if necessary, if the defaulters fail to clear the bills within the given time.
The committee came up with the suggestions at its 12th meeting, held at Jatiya Sangsad with its Chairman Dr Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir in the chair following an audit objection involving Tk 27.07 million.
The Comptroller and Auditor General's audit reports of 2007-08 and 2008-09 relating to the BTCL under the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry were discussed at the meeting.
Committee members Abdus Shahid, Aman Ullah, Afsarul Amin, AFM Ruhal Haque, Shamsul Haque Tuku, AKM Mayeedul Islam, Rustum Ali Faraji and Begum Wasika Ayesha Khan attended the meeting.
Comptroller and Auditor General Masud Ahmed, Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Foyzur Rahman Chowdhury and BTRC Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose were, among others, present at the meeting.
