Push for GI certification of indigenous products

Speakers at a programme on Wednesday laid emphasis on the need for getting geographical indication or GI certification for indigenous products like handloom.
They also called for boosting country branding through promoting local indigenous products at various international events.
The opinion was made during the inauguration of a month-long 'heritage handloom festival-2020' co-hosted by SME Foundation (SMEF) and the Association of Fashion Designers Bangladesh (AFDB). The exhibition is taking place on a website this year, considering the eerie Covid-19 situation.
Education minister Dr Dipu Moni inaugurated the handicraft show virtually as the chief guest.
State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam and industries secretary KM Ali Azam joined the event as the special guests.
SMEF chairperson Dr Md Masudur Rahman presided over the programme where SMEF managing director Md Safiqul Islam and AFDB president Mantasha Ahmed also spoke.
