The state-controlled Rural Electrification Board (REB) has sought Tk 2.62 billion in financial assistance from the government to help run its operations, officials said.
The power division has recently sent a letter to the finance ministry for the support after request from the REB, they said.
The government has raised retail power tariffs from March last, but the rate for residential users and irrigation has remained unchanged.
Officials said since the Polli Bidyut Samity will not be able to meet its costs due to previous tariff rate, the state entity will face losses. "It requires at least Tk 2.62 billion to adjust the losses," an official said.
The official said price of electricity consumed by general people especially the poor has not been raised.
The power consumed by irrigation pumps has also been kept unchanged as agriculture is known as the backbone of this country," he added.
