Rice, poultry meat, vegetable prices up

Prices of rice, poultry meat and some vegetables witnessed hike on Friday over that of its previous week, according the key kitchen markets. Prices of chilli and onion showed a nominal decline on the day. However, prices of most of other commodities including edible oil were seen static on the day compared to that of its previous level. Prices of rice increased by Tk0.5-Tk2.0 at per kg from wholesale levels to retail levels in last seven days. Coarse variety Swarna was sold at Tk32-34 per kg which was Tk30-32 pr kg a week back. Medium quality Brridhan-28 and 29 were sold at Tk38-39 and Tk41-42 per kg -Tk1.0 increase at retail on the day compared to that of a week back. But finer varieties like Najirshail and Miniket remained static maintaining higher prices. Md Abdal Rahman, manager of Shamota rice agency at Babu Bazar in the city said that prices of different varieties of rice increased by Tk0.5-0.6 per kg in last seven days amid imposition of duty on rice import by the government. "But the price will not increase much as local production remained very good this year," he said. Prices of broiler and layer chicken increased by Tk5-10 per kg in last seven days. Broiler was sold at Tk165-170 and layer at Tk170-175 per kg on the day.
