Former chief economist of Roads and Highways Department Syed Faizul Islam has urged the well-off people of society to come forward to help alleviate poverty across the country.
"A combined effort of the rich people can lessen sufferings of the helpless people of the society significantly," he said while distributing cows among the poor people of Alkara union under Chauddagram upazila recently.
The programme was organised by Dekra Fi Sabilillah Foundation, a charitable organisation.
Mr Islam, also head of the charitable organisation, said if all the well-off people come forward to help the needy, then it would be possible to ensure minimum livelihood of all the poor across the country.
"We always remain busy with our own selves, but most of us don't think about our social responsibilities set by the Almighty," he added.
"There are many people around us who cannot arrange food for their family members regularly. There are many young children who cannot go to school despite having enough potential. And there are many people around us who cannot ensure minimum medical facilities for their dependants. But there are also many people among us who spend a large amount of money for luxury - this is really pathetic."
"If every rich citizen of the country looks after a single poverty-hit person to uplift his/her financial, educational and medical condition, then it would be tough to find an ultra poor in the country within a decade," Mr Islam said.
Dekra Fi Sabilillah Foundation is a non-political charitable organisation established in late 1990 with the vision of spreading its charitable activities across the country and so far it has distributed over 600 cows among more than 150 ultra poor families of Alkara union of Chauddagram upazila.
This year the organisation distributed 50 cows among the poor families of the area in presence of its donor members and the elite.
About 60 donor members are contributing money to the foundation to spread its charity work. Anyone with a minimum contribution of Tk 2,500 can become a member of the foundation.
The foundation distributes cows among the helpless people under the condition of rearing the cattle until it gives birth to a calf. Then the family will be given another cow with the same condition. And this way every family will get at least five cows gradually so that the family can be self-dependent after a certain period.
Anyone can contact Mr Islam by dialling 01715995962 to be a member of the foundation.
