CHITTAGONG, June 7: The workers of two readymade garment (RMG) factories laid siege to the busy Sheikh Mujib Road at Dewanhat intersection in the city today (Saturday) in protest against termination of their colleagues and demanding payment of their wages.
About 500 workers of Wakia Fashions and Techno Fashions owned by Md Foisal came out of the factories at around 10am and demonstrated on the road.
It caused severe traffic congestions on both sides of the road from Tiger Pass to Agrabad commercial area in the port city.
Thousands of office-goers had been stranded for over an hour until the police from the Double Mooring police station and industrial police persuaded them to go into the factories and hold their programme there.
According to Inspector of Industrial Police Arifur Rahman, a few workers were terminated from the Wakia Fashions and salaries for the month of May were yet to be paid.
The police said the workers demonstrated on the day as they failed to reach any deal on reinstatement of the terminated workers at meetings held with the management earlier this month.
