SAHR calls for suspension of Rampal plant

The South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), a regional human rights group, has called for suspension of construction and other activities of the Rampal coal-fired power project in Bangladesh until an "impartial, comprehensive and science-based" environmental impact assessment (EIA) on the Sundarbans in conducted.

If found damaging to the Sundarbans, the project must be cancelled immediately and relocate to an environmentally-sustainable site.  

 The SAHR made the call in its report following fielding a fact finding mission to Rampal on establishment of 1,320-megawatt power plants in April 2015.  The organisation made its reports available in its official website.

In its report, the regional rights group also expressed its concern that if implemented it would lead to considerable losses of livelihood, scarcity of foods and drinking water, loss of habitat for plants and animals, and health hazards.
