Russia and Iran are in discussion on construction of second unit at Bushehr nuclear power project in Iran. Deputy Chief of Russia's state nuclear energy corporation - Rosatom Nikolai Spassky informed the media it during his recent visit to Vienna. According Iranian authority construction of the second unit with the help of Russia is expected to begin during the current year, according to a statement.
The 1st unit of Bushehr NPP with 1,000 Mw capacity also was constructed by Russia entered in to full production in June 2013. In September, a protocol on transferring the Bushehr NPP to Iranian specialists was signed.
In December, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced that Iran has planed to generate more electricity from the nuclear power stations in the coming years. Building a second nuclear power unit in Bushehr would help in this direction. "Our first nuclear power plant is active in the (Bushehr) province which will develop further, God willing," Rouhani said, addressing provincial managers and officials of Bushehr province at that time.
Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said most of Iran's new power plants will be built near the country's coasts in the South and the North. He stressed upon Russia's active cooperation in the field of nuclear power generation.
Iranian authority is planning to generate a total of 20,000 megawatts of electricity by 2020 and Iran has identified 34 potential sites for building additional nuclear power plants. Iran is also expecting to export electricity to neighbouring Gulf countries in near future.
Bushehr NPP is located about 18 kilometres south of the provincial capital of Bushehr.
