Simplify trade, investment policies

DCCI delegation urges commerce minister

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Monday urged Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi to simplify the trade and investment policies for boosting the country's economic growth.

A delegation of the trade body, led by its President Osama Taseer, made the request as they called on the minister at his secretariat office.

The DCCI president proposed to formulate a comprehensive trade policy and an automated tariff system for sustainable export development of the country.

He also urged the minister to take necessary initiatives for signing free trade agreement with Sri Lanka and Malaysia as soon as possible while taking steps for removing tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade with India.

Mr. Taseer said that the Remediation Coordination Cell (RCC) for the readymade garment (RMG) industry would help improve the working environment in the factories.

"We are in the era of 4th industrial revolution (4IR). Conducive policies should be framed to reap the best benefits out of this revolution," he said.

Mr. Tipu Munshi said that policy reforms, policy simplification, need-based policy formation and reducing outdated polices are necessary to ensure conducive business environment.

He also stressed the need for diversification of RMG products while finding other potential export items. He suggested formulating sector-specific policies.

Mofizul Islam, DCCI Senior Vice-President Waqar Ahmad Choudhury, Vice-President Imran Ahmed, Directors Abul Kasem Khan, Ashraf Ahmed, Enamul Haque Patwary, Hossain A Sikder, KMN Manjurul Haque, Engr. Md. Al Amin, Md. Rashedul Karim Munna, Mohammad Bashiruddin, Shams Mahmud and SM Zillur Rahman were present, among others.
