Demand for and sale of smart televisions have increased more on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Fitr than  normal period, branch managers and sales people at the electronics outlets in the city told the FE.
According to them, sale of smart televisions has increased in this Eid, creating a craze among the city dwellers.
They pointed out that different kinds of campaigns, advertisements, dissemination of information regarding the distinct features of smart televisions are influencing the customers to a great extent to buy this modern device.
A smart TV, sometimes referred to as connected TV or hybrid TV, is a television set with integrated Internet and Web 2.0 features. It is an example of technological convergence between computers and television sets and set-top boxes.
The TV offers some distinct advantages over the normal ones, as smart televisions have a network connection, and the customers are able to connect to Internet, play videos from sources, play video games, and have web browser. These TVs' electricity consumption is low, and different kinds of mobile apps can be run along with getting access to social media, eliminating the clutter of additional boxes and cables.
Talking with the FE, Mohammad Mahbubul Haque, a branch manager of Rangs Electronics at Stadium Market, said generally they sell four to six smart televisions daily. But with the Eid knocking at the door, their sales have increased to 18 to 20 televisions daily.
"I think various distinct features of smart televisions have drawn attention from the viewers, especially the young ones, to choose such products. Actually internet access facility is one of the key factors behind such upsurge," he added.
Towfiq Islam, in-charge of Walton Elephant Road branch, said they have also witnessed significant increase in sale of smart televisions. Before Ramadan they could sell 30 to 40 smart televisions per month, but within the 25th Ramadan they have sold around 90 such television sets.
"Prices of our smart televisions range from Tk 52,900 to Tk 85,000. We also offer payment in installments facility to our customers. Sales of such televisions have increased on this Eid."
"Customers know that the services of these TVs are not limited to the single purpose of watching television only. Rather smart televisions offer diverse services with a single box," he added.
Towshik Ahmed, a student of Dhaka City College, was seen buying a smart television at Elephant Road. He told the FE that he prefers smart television to normal television, as the former contains a number of distinct modern facets.
"Distinct features, such as - television with internet access, video games, and access to social media etc, influenced me to buy a smart television. Its price also does not vary much from the normal ones, which is also a factor behind my decision," he added.
Kamrul Hasan, another customer who just bought a smart television, told the FE his son informed him about various features of smart televisions.
"I think it is good, if different kinds of modern facilities can be found through a television set, which influenced me to buy smart television," he added.
