Speaker for boosting coop among S Asian countries to attain uplift

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has stressed on enhancing cooperation among South Asian countries to achieve desired target of socio-economic uplift in the region.
"It's not possible to reach desired target of development of the South Asian nations without strengthening regional cooperation in various fields," she said.
The Speaker said this while addressing a conference organised by Policy Group on 'Vision 2014 Regional Cooperation' in New Delhi, India on Friday.
The Speaker also emphasised finding out the best ways for ensuring desired development in the region through mutual cooperation, according to an official handout, reports BSS.
"The people of the region have to work together for increasing power generation, water resources management, facing regional terrorism and enhancing connectivity to this end," she added.
Regarding the country's position in this regard, the Speaker said Bangladesh is committed to prevent all forms of regional terrorism for ensuring security in the region.
All countries in the region have to work together for poverty alleviation, food security, peace and stability for achieving sustainable development, she added.
In this connection, the Speaker said that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) could play a pivotal role to ensure regional coordination in this regard.
Describing India as a trusted-friend of Bangladesh, she said the people of Bangladesh would always remember India's support and cooperation in Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971.
"Bilateral cooperation in economic sector has further cemented relation between the two neighbouring countries over the years towards achieving progress of the two nations," the Speaker said.
Commerce Minister of Nepal Sunil Bahadur Thapa and former foreign minister of Sri Lanka Rohita Bogollagama also addressed the conference with former Secretary General of Saarc Shilkanta Sharma in the chair.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tarique A Karim, among others, was present at the conference.
