CHATTOGRAM, Dec 03: The final dissemination workshop on a project of Chattogram city's strategic urban transport master plan was held on Sunday.

Earlier, a series of workshops and a study on the Chattogram Strategic Urban Transport Master Plan - a technical assistance project financed by the World Bank - were held in the port city.

The findings of the study and suggestions from the workshops were discussed in Sunday's meetong, with all key stakeholders giving their observations.

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) under the Ministry of Public Works and Housing is one of the key stakeholders of the project.

The project was taken in August 2016 and in the last two years, a Strategic Master Plan was prepared by a consulting team with the aim to solve the current transport problem in Chattogram. A monitoring team, consisting all stakeholders of the project, was also formed during a dissemination meeting held earlier.

The plan was prepared taking into account the observations and recommendations made by the stakeholders.

The other stakeholders are Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), vehicle owners associations, transport workers' associations and the consumer groups, including engineers and town planners.

They recommended making investments focusing on short-term (2019-2022), medium term (2023-2025) and long-term (2026-2030) plans with emphasis on both infrastructural and capacity development projects.

Recommendations were also made to focus on the freight transport and the impact of freight transport on the city traffic.

The workshop also discussed accessibility, pedestrian facilities, public transport service quality, women and other vulnerable passenger groups, railway and waterway crossings, enforcement of traffic law and road management, parking policy and plying of non-motorised vehicles on the road.
