Workers of eight state-owned jute mills in Khulna division enforced a half-day strike on Sunday to press home their 11-point demand, reports UNB.

The strike began around 9:00am.

Workers of Crescent Jute Mills, Platinum Jute Mills, Khalispur Jute Mills, Star Jute Mills, Alim Jute Mills, Eastern Jute Mills, Jashore Jute Mills and Carpeting Jute Mills staged demonstrations on the mill premises.

Their demands include payment of wages arrears, implementation of wage commission and job regularisation, said Sarder Abu Hanif, president of Alim Jute Mill Workers Union.

The agitating workers blocked the Khulna-Jashore highway at Natun Rasta intersection, Atrai Industrial area and in front of Jashore Jute Mill, halting vehicular movement on the highway.

They said they will declare new programme on May 4 if their demands are not fulfilled.

The workers also declared that they would boycott voting in the upcoming Khulna City Corporation polls.
