Strong Shariah governance is crucial to ensuring transparency, accountability and public confidence in the banking sector, industry experts said at a workshop.
Jointly organised by Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) and Bangladesh Bank, the three-day workshop titled 'Shariah Governance for the Members of Shariah Supervisory Committee' began in the city on Tuesday.
Md. Kabir Ahmed, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB), inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest while Md Ezazul Islam, Director General of BIBM chaired the event. Prof Abu Bakr Rafique, Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Board of Bangladesh Bank, was present as special guest.

In his address, BB Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed said effective Shariah governance is essential to ensure transparency, compliance and integrity in Islamic banking operations.
A robust governance framework helps build trust among depositors and stakeholders while supporting the sustainable growth of Islamic finance, he added.
BIBM Director General Md Ezazul Islam reiterated the institute's commitment to promoting good governance and professional excellence in the banking sector through training, research and knowledge sharing.
Prof Rafique, Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Board of Bangladesh Bank, emphasised the need for a strong institutional framework to ensure transparency and accountability in Islamic banking practices.
Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Central Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh, highlighted the growing importance of strengthening Shariah oversight mechanisms in line with the expansion of the Islamic banking sector in Bangladesh.
The workshop has brought together members of Shariah Supervisory Committees from various Islamic banks and financial institutions. It aims to enhance their understanding of governance frameworks, regulatory requirements and best practices to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in the sector.
