Development of supply chain is important for ensuring fair prices of agricultural products as agriculture is the potential sector of Bangladesh after ready-made garment (RMG), said speakers at a workshop in the capital on Thursday.
They stressed the need for ensuring value chain, supply chain and adequate preservation system for agro-products.
Their observations came at the closing day of the three-day workshop on "Promotion of Exports from Bangladesh: Product Certification and Sustainable Development".
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and USAID's Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) Project jointly organised the workshop.
"We must improve the supply chain and should have adequate storage facilities for preservation of agro products that will help boost the agriculture sector," President of American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) Aftab ul Islam said while distributing certificates among the participants as the chief guest.
The project mainly aims at increasing value chain in agriculture sector for food security and sustainable economic development.
This project will work in 20 districts of Dhaka, Barisal and Khulna divisions. A total of 30 participants of different organisations took part in the workshop.
Mr Islam said more than 60 per cent of pineapples produced in the Chittagong region are on the verge of perishing due to lack of proper storage facilities.
"We must produce agricultural products by adopting modern technology and focus on supply chain management," he said.
He expressed the opinion that the exporters of agriculture sector of the country need more training in order to attain globally recognised know-how and expertise.
The AmCham president stressed the need for proper supply chain, value chain and preservation system of agricultural products.
Bangladesh is now exporting quality organic vegetables and fruits to the international market, he said.
He called upon the participants to utilise the knowledge gathered from the workshop to develop country's export promotion.
USAID's Chief of Party William T Levine said the AVC Project is committed to increasing the expertise of Bangladeshi exporters of this sector.
USAID's private sector adviser Aniruddha Roy said the AVC is a five-year project implemented by USAID.
DCCI's senior vice president Humayun Rashid suggested for market analysis, drawing trade map, finding out potential and attractive markets.
DCCI's vice president Md Shoaib Choudhury said Bangladesh is moving fast in the agriculture sector.
He stressed the need for ensuring the sustainable development of agricultural sector for getting access to international market with diversified production base.
