Tariff Commission chief for rational fixation of tariff

CHITTAGONG, May 28: Bangladesh Tariff Commission Chairman Dr Azizur Rahman has stressed the need for logically fixing of different taxes and duties on imported goods being produced in the country.
He said country's economy depends on rapid growth of local industries and with that aim, the government fixes different taxes so that our industries can cope with other regional industries.
"We are also attaching high importance to maintaining the global standards of products," he said while addressing a meeting at Hotel Agrabad in the city today.
The meeting on 'protection of local industries and boosting national economic growth' was organised jointly by Bangladesh Tariff Commission (BTC) and Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CWCCI).
Chaired by acting president of the CWCCI Ivy Hassan, the function was also addressed by joint secretary and member of the Tariff Commission Afroza Parveen, former panel mayor and director of CWCCI Rekha Alam Chowdhury, owner of a fashion house Kazi Shehtaz Perveen and Abida Mostafa.
Joint chief of Trade Remedy Division Roma Dewan and deputy chief Billal Hossain Molla briefed the CWCCI members on the activities of the tariff commission through power presentation.
Dr. Aziz said the tariff commission protects the interests of local products and industries through imposing anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty and safeguard measures as per the WTO (World Trade Organization) Agreement.
