Three telcos pay Tk 27.8m in fines


The telecoms regulator recently fined three mobile phone operators-Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink-Tk 27.8 million on allegations of illegally operating the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) business.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) fined Grameenphone Tk 5.25 million, Robi Tk 2.10 million and Banglalink Tk 1.5 million for flouting the commission's directive and licensing conditions.
The operator trio paid the administrative fines on July 12-14, reads a press statement of the telecoms watchdog.
The BTRC penalised the cellular companies after the seizure of SIMs (subscriber identity modules) used in illegal VoIP while conducting drives at times.
The regulator has also instructed the operators to comply with some instructions.
It seized 32,845 SIMs of Teletalk, 16,390 of Robi, 2,356 of Grameenphone and 753 of Banglalink, according to an earlier statement of the BTRC.
