Experts at a workshop Sunday suggested ensuring implementation of the existing laws to remove the barriers to export of Bangladeshi fisheries products including shrimp.
They alleged that the sector people are not properly following codes of conduct for the industry which is creating obstacles to shrimp export. If they can ensure the same, it will improve quality of products and expand the foreign market of Bangladeshi fisheries.
The experts urged the government to take steps to amend some existing laws and rules with a view to expanding the area of shrimp export.
They were speaking at a dissemination workshop on 'Review of and recommendations on existing codes of conducts for Bangladesh shrimp industry in the light of import rules and regulations of EU and USA' organised by Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Selina Afroza was present as the chief guest while Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute Chief Executive Officer Mozibur Rahman, Export Promotion Bureau Vice Chairman Shubhashish Bose and FAO representative in Bangladesh Mike Robson attended the workshop as special guests.
Speaking on the occasion Selina Afroza said: "The fisheries export market will be expanded, if we can ensure food safety as per the local and international codes of conduct. This move will ultimately contribute to increasing fisheries production, creating employment opportunity as well as achieving economic development."
"The government is continuously monitoring the food safety issues. We will identify those that can create problems and take necessary steps to revise and implement the same in an appropriate perspective. For this, the government is taking steps to increase manpower," she said.
She said proper implementation of the codes of conduct will play a significant role for Bangladesh in branding its products in near future.
BSFF Executive Director Mahmudul Karim made a presentation on 'Codes of Conduct for Bangladesh Shrimp Industry' while BSFF Chairperson Syed Mahmudul Huq presided over the workshop.
