Thrust on merger in banking sector

Speakers at a seminar have laid emphasis on good governance alongside merger among comparatively and weak banks to bring discipline in the country's banking sector.
They also suggested the government to oversee whether the bank owners and entrepreneurs have any collaboration to make the sector unstable, as many of the industrialists have ownership in the banks, reports BSS.
Entrepreneurship Economics of Dhaka School of Economics (DScE) organised the seminar at its campus in city. Coordinator of Entrepreneurship Economics Professor Dr Muhammad Mahboob Ali chaired the seminar, said a press release on Tuesday.
Banking sector expert and Acasia Global Consulting Founder Chairman and CEO Professor Arup Choudhuri said India does not allow the industry owners to have bank licence that is why numbers of bank in the country comparatively low.
He opined that the micro credit and SME banking are pushing the economic indicators of Bangladesh upward although the overall banking sector could not perform well as per expectations.
Arup, however, put emphasis on venture capital for entrepreneurs and said more venture capital would come when the number of entrepreneurs is increased.
Professor Mahboob Ali said the government should also focus on capital market alongside the banking sector.
