KHULNA, Sept 13 (BSS): The Income Tax Zone of Khulna has collected Tk 9.50 billion in the fiscal year (FY) 2013-14, which is Tk 2.90 billion higher than that of the previous fiscal.
The Zone had set a collection target of Tk 8.50 billion, but the collection was to the tune of Tk 9.50 billion from around 0.2 million taxpayers. Of them 80,000 submitted returns.
"The target surpassed due to continuous efforts to enhance the number of taxpayers," Golam Mostofa, Commissioner of Tax of Khulna Zone, said in a press conference at Khulna Press Club today (Saturday) ahead of the National Income Tax Day-2014, scheduled to be started tomorrow (Monday), and week-long Income Tax Fair-2014 starting from September 16.
One Stop Service Center will be provided to assist the tax payers in the fair, he said adding that at least 30,000 tax payers are expected to submit returns during the Fair.
He said that the rate of income tax earning has been growing day by day in the wake of bringing simplicity in the tax realisation system including e-TIN registration together with developing cordial relation between the tax officials and taxpayers.
He said the growth rate is significant for the area comprising the districts of Jessore, Khulna, Magura, Satkhira, Bagerhat and Jhenidah where there are established big industries including jute mills, shrimp factories and brick kilns.
"We have set a target to realise Tk 12.50 billion in the current fiscal and we are hopeful of exceeding this target by end of the fiscal," said Golam Mostofa.
He, however, said, "For the sake of tax collection, there is no hesitation for filing certificate case or fining, even confiscating bank accounts of those identified as defaulters". He said the number of certificate cases, lodged so far, mounted to more than 175 in the zone.
To expand the tax network, various motivational campaigns like tax fair, spot assessment, survey and reward for the taxpayers have been introduced.
Additional Commissioners Reazul Islam, Joint Commissioner Monjurul Alam, Assistant Commissioner Mir Rezwan were present at the media briefing.
