The Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association, (BFFEA), the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and the Solidarity Center- Bangladesh (SCB) Wednesday signed a tripartite agreement on 'Rules of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanism' for the country's shrimp sector.
BFFEA President Md Amin Ullah, BSFF Chairman Syed Mahmudul Haq and SCB Field Programme Specialist Jennifer Kuhlman signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations to resolve disputes between the employers and the workers of shrimp and fish processing industry.
Commerce senior secretary Mahbub Ahmed was present as the chief guest while Fisheries and Livestock secretary Shelina Afroza as special guest in the signing ceremony.
Earlier on March 24, 2013, the BFFEA, the BSFF and the Solidarity Center signed a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to work together to promote the Bangladesh Labour Law and ILO Core Labour Standards in the shrimp and fish processing industry in Bangladesh and the rules of ADR mechanism was developed in pursuance of that MoA.
Based on the MoA, a project was undertaken by the three parties in association with the Department of Fisheries (DoF). The project is funded by the USAID through the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL).
Under this project, the employers and the workers will be able to resolve their disputes taking a number of steps through bi-partite negotiation, mediation and arbitration.
The parties hoped that through this process, which is voluntary, the workers and the employers will be able to resolve the disputes in a comparatively shorter period of time avoiding the lengthy process of formal legal system through courts.
Department of Fisheries director general Syed Arif Azad and US Embassy acting political and economic counselor Tobais Glusman were present, among others, at the ceremony.
