The country's poultry sector braces for fresh crisis as the nationwide indefinite blockade has affected transport of feed to the farms, an industry leader said.
"The shortage of poultry feed will create a big problem due to the supply disruption of feed to the poultry farms and we can't sufficiently feed the broiler and layer. After 15 to 20 days, we can get a real picture of the impact," Bangladesh Poultry Industry Coordination Committee (BPICC) convener Moshiur Rahman told the FE.
"During the blockade, we can't transport egg, broiler and layer and poultry feed from one place to another that is creating a big trouble for the sector," said Mr Rahman, also managing director of Paragon Poultry Ltd.
BPICC General secretary Khandker Mohammad Mohsin said the sector needs around 19 to 23 items to make poultry feed for the broiler and layer chickens of poultry farms.
Among these maize, rice polish and soya meal are three most essential ingredients, he added.
There are four types of broiler feed like - pre started, starter, grower and finish. Layer feeds are -- pre started, starter, grower, pre layer, layer 1, 2, 3.
"I am getting a number of phones from different parts of the country including Bogra, Dinagpur, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Thakugaon, Natore, and Chapainawabganj that they have poultry shortage of poultry feed ingredients."
He said now different small and big poultry farms have poultry fee for three to 18 days, according to different farm owners.
Although the government has agreed to provide police protection for any sector upon request for smooth transportation of raw materials, truck owners association is not interested to run their transport during blockade and hartals.
The sector people said they have to pay truck fare around three times higher now than the earlier period due to blockade.
The annual demand of poultry feed is estimated at around 3.3 million tonnes used by around 93,000 poultry farms in Bangladesh, BPICC sources said.
Mr Rahman urged political parties to keep the poultry sector out of the range of blockade and hartals for the interests of the sector.
Otherwise, if the political situation continues, it will destroy the poultry sector, he added.
