UAE to ensure mandatory housing standard for workers

The UAE government has taken an initiative to encourage employers to provide improved dormitory facilities with 'some mandatory housing standards' to expatriate workers they are engaging in business, factories and infrastructure projects.
The Ministry of Labour (MoL) recently launched an 'occupational health and safety awareness campaign' pinpointing on proper housing standards for labourers in compliance with the government decree issued by the UAE cabinet in 2009, reports Khaleej Times on June 1 issue.   
It said the campaign launched by the Occupational Health and Safety Department of
the ministry of labour targets business owners in Dubai and the northern regions through  discussion meetings every week up to September to create the greater awareness on the need for a minimum healthy living place for workers.
"The campaign represents the ministry's keenness on educating owners to follow a list of mandatory housing standards. Labour housing should include certain components to be built upon, such as the location, size and proportion with the number of users," the report said quoting the director of the Occupational Health and Safety Department.
"Owners must provide all bedroom requirements for their workers, as well as meet the requirements for providing all necessary facilities such as kitchens, eating rooms and medical clinics that will ensure the safety and comfort of those resident labourers," he emphasized.
He has urged business owners to seriously adhere to the ministry's list of housing standards. The ministry's inspectors will take frequent field visits to report on noncompliance and lawbreaking. Lawbreakers will be slapped with harsh fines and sanctions, the report said.
