Speakers at a meeting held Saturday stressed the need for qualitative technological upgradation in the industrial production to compete in the globalised world.
"There is no alternative to having different international certifications to make the Bangladeshi products acceptable including ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and ISO 18001," they said.
They were speaking at the inaugural session of a workshop on "Technology Upgradation of SMEs through Implementation of International Standards" in the city organized by SME Foundation.
Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) President M Shamim Z Basunia spoke as the chief guest on the occasion, while Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) Chairman Ahmmad Ismail Mostafa, Director General of Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) Md. Abdullah, Director of National Productivity Organisation (NPO) Md. Nazrul Islam attended as special guests.
SMEF Managing Director Syed Md Ehsanul Karim presided over the programme.
Three experts presented three papers on the three international certificates EMS-ISO 14001, EnMA- ISO 50001 and OHSAS-ISO 18001.
EIB President M Shamim Z Basunia said the Engineers Institution is ready to provide technical support to any industrial unit in the country.
He said industrial units should have international certification to create acceptability of their products in the international markets.
He also said laws and policies are not a problem in the country, the problem is in their implementation.
BCSIR Chairman Ahmmad Ismail Mostafa said Science and Technology Policy 2011 should be implemented properly.
"We have to lower our cost in production, at a time we have to ensure quality using state-of-the-art technologies available in the world," he said.
BAB DG Md. Abu Abdullah said that they offer many training courses for the industrial upgradation but people are not interested in it.
He suggested that producers should meet customers' demand and interest to reach global buyers.
He said it is not easy to get various certifications by SMEs. Multinational or big corporations only can get certifications, he added.
NOP Director Dr. Nazrrul Islam urged producers to increase efficiency as much as possible, but the production must be sustainable.
