Vegetable prices see significant rise

Prices of chilli, coriander leaf and some other vegetables increased significantly in the last week due to incessant rain during the last few days which caused severe damage of such crops in major hubs.
Prices of broiler chicken declined while onion and palm oil increased slightly in the market.
Chilli prices hit Tk 150-160 per kg which was Tk 110-120 per kg a week back.
Coriander leaf was sold at Tk 600-620 per kg, a record high, according to data available by the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM).
Bitter gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, pointed gourd, teasle gourd, tomato, leaf vegetables prices increased by Tk2-10 per kg in last seven days, according to key kitchen markets in the city.  
Even prices of vegetables like eddo, clocasia stem, clocasia esculenta (shola kochu), which grow well in rainy season, were also selling at higher prices-in between Tk60 and 70 per kg.     
Md Abdul Latif, president of Karwan Bazar Kanchamal Arat Baboshayee Samity, an association of wholesale traders of the city said continuous rainfall in the last couple of weeks damaged vegetables fields in the different parts of the country which caused a supply crunch.
"Crop damage adding to this rising demand in the Ramadan has caused significant hike in prices of such vegetables," he said.
Prices of onion witnessed a Tk1-2 increase in a week.
Local varieties of onion were sold at Tk45-48 per kg on the day and imported varieties at Tk36-42 per kg.
Super palm oil was sold at Tk76-78 per kg and normal palm oil at Tk68-70 per kg
Prices of chicken (broiler) declined by Tk10 per kg and sold at Tk155-160 per kg from Tk165-170 per kg a week back.
Prices of most of other commodities remained static duing the week.
