A regional pharmaceuticals exhibition concluded in the city Saturday, which has enabled local drug makers to get oriented with cutting-edge technology.

The participants said that the seventh Asia Pharma expo 2015 has created an opportunity to interact with professionals, pharmacists, drug manufacturers, doctors and other stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector.

"We were initially scared about the blockade. But we've received a good number of visitors during the fair despite the blockade." Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) Secretary General Abdul Muktadir told the FE.

He said on the first day of the fair, the presence of visitors was not satisfactory, but the number gradually increased.

"We faced some problems to bring all the displaying items to the venue due to blockade but by the second day we were able to display all the products," he said.

Mr Muktadir said this fair is helping the local industry to create initial contacts and local drug manufacturers can easily get advanced technologies and machinery.

Electrolab manager of sales Kirti S Vyavahare said his company sold a dissolution testing machine, and other lab equipments to local Ibn Sina Diagnostic Laboratory during the fair.

She said that they have received a lot of enquiries from the visitors and expressed the hope that the visitors will contact after the end of the fair.

Regarding the presence of Bangladeshi stalls, a participant named Salauddin Ahmed, marketing director of Bangladesh Scientific Instrument Company, said: "The participation of local pharmaceuticals was poor in the fair as most of stalls of were focusing on the machinery and equipments of pharmaceutical industries."

He said local manufacturers are gradually improving and they should participate in the fair with their manufacturing products.

The local manufacturers were able to watch quality control, drug testing and laboratory machineries, medicine processing and packaging materials and machineries in the expo.

The country is now able to meet the 99 per cent of domestic demand. Local companies are exporting drugs to 87 foreign countries across the globe.

The exhibitors from 30 countries including China, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Thailand displayed new pharmaceutical technologies, machinery and other related products in the event.

The three day-long 'Asia Pharma Expo 2015' began in the city Thursday, organised jointly by Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) and GPE Expo Private Limited.
