Weak demand drives down chick prices

FE Report | November 01, 2014 00:00:00

Prices of chicken and some winter vegetables declined in the city kitchen markets on Friday compared to a week ago.

Most of other commodity prices showed static trend on the day, traders said.

Broiler chicken was sold at Tk120-130 per kg on the day-a Tk10-15 reduction in a week.

Md Sabbir Mian, a chicken retailer at Nowabganjbazar in the city, said that demand for meat is still low as most of the residents' refrigerators are filled with sacrificial meat of Eid-ul-Azha.

He said prices of indigenous and Pakistani variety also declined.

Pakistani variety was sold at Tk180-200 (medium sized) and Tk250-300 (big sized) per piece on Friday, which was Tk200-220 and Tk300-350 per piece respectively seven days back, Md Sabbir said.

He said local varieties were sold at Tk280-300 (medium sized) and Tk 400-420 (big) per piece---a 10 per cent plunge in a week.

Breeders Association of Bangladesh secretary Saidur Rahman Babu told the FE that demand fell by more than 30 per cent in the last one month due to the Eid-ul-Azha celebration.

"It is now tough to produce per kg broiler below Tk145, the weakening demand is forcing us to sell the produce at lower rate," he said.

He said the rate of broiler chicken at the farm level was Tk115-116 per kg on Friday, which was Tk 120-122 per kg three days back.

"But the market will return to the previous high in a few days when household demand will increase," he said.

Prices of early winter crops like cauliflower, local bean, long bean, tomato, radish and vegetable leaf like spinach dropped by Tk5-20 per kg or per piece or per bunch.

Local bean was selling at Tk80-100, long bean at Tk70-80, tomato at Tk90-100, cauliflower (medium sized) at Tk25-30 per piece, radish at Tk30-35 per kg and spinach (palang shak) at Tk15-20 per bunch on the day.

Price of coriander leaf, another winter vegetable, was static and sold at Tk400-450 per kg based on their quality.

Prices of other vegetable were static maintaining the higher rate, retailers said.
