CHITTAGONG, Jan 10: Western Marine Shipyard has secured another new order from the African market. This time the shipyard will build a 33m shallow draft Ro Ro ferry for the government of Uganda.
Western Marine Shipyard signed contract with JGH Marine A/S, Denmark to build and deliver the ferry to the Ugandan National Roads Authority (UNRA). This project will be marked as a great achievement for the shipbuilding industry of Bangladesh.
The net value of this new building project is around Tk 240 million and the WMS expects to deliver the vessel within 12 months. It delivered a passenger ferry to Tanzania in October 2014. Presently the WMS is building an offshore patrol vessel for the Kenyan department of fisheries.
The Ro Ro ferry will be used to carry vehicles and passengers in the inland waterways of Uganda, WMS said. The government of Uganda will operate the ferry in Lake Kyoga. The ship will have a carrying capacity of 120 passengers and 16 units of cars. The ferry is expected to add great value in the transport sector of Uganda.
Western Marine which delivered passenger ferries to Denmark, Tanzania, Pakistan and the government of Bangladesh, is specialised in building such ships. Building passenger ships requires high level of expertise which Western Marine has achieved from its operation in the last one decade.
The WMS said Africa is now a potential market for new-building orders and the yard expects to receive more orders from the African market as it is already in talks with many buyers.
