CHITTAGONG, Feb 28: Western Marine Shipyard has signed a contract for building a container vessel for Bancan Shipping Ltd.
The new contract of shipbuilding for the 176 TEUs container vessel was signed in Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel by chairman of the shipyard Saiful Islam and chairman of Bancan Shipping Ltd Sarwar Hossain.
The ship will carry 176 TEUs of containers from Chittagong Port to the newly-developed Pangaon Inland Container Terminal (PICT) in Narayanganj. This way the inbound containers will be transported to Dhaka by inland river route which will reduce the country's traffic density on highways.
Western Marine signed contracts for 10 container vessels earlier for different companies which will serve pangaon. After the global financial crisis and national political crisis the market is emerging once again and these new-building projects will add value to the economy.
The ship will make a major contribution in the country's economy for port service enhancement and at the same time will play a major role in reduction of the traffic density on highways by transporting the imported goods by river.
