World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General Roberto Azevedo arrives in the capital tomorrow (Tuesday) on a two-day visit to discuss trade-related issues with government officials and private sector entrepreneurs, reports UNB.
He will go to Kathmandu, Nepal and meet senior government officials and private sector representatives there after completing Dhaka visit, according to a WTO media note.
Azevedo is expected to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and the business community leaders during his stay in Dhaka.
Bangladesh, being a member of LDCs (least developed countries), will discuss the progresses of implementation of the LDC package adopted in the Bali Ministerial Conference during his visit. The immediate-past WTO DG Pascal Lamy visited Bangladesh in April 2012.
Roberto Azevêdo is the sixth DG of the WTO and his appointment took effect on September 1, 2013 for a four-year term.
The WTO is the only global international organisation dealing with the rules of trade among nations.
The developed countries agreed on providing duty-free market access to all products originated from the LDCs in the WTO's Hong Kong Ministerial Conference in 2005.
