Zambia vies for ITU candidature seat

LUSAKA, Oct 11 (Xinhua): Zambia has expressed interest to vie for a seat on the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council and has since asked for support from African nations, a statement released by the country's telecommunication regulator on Friday said.
The southern African nation has announced its candidature for election to the ITU council for the period 2014-2018, according to the statement released by the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) on its Facebook page.
Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Yamfwa Mukanga said in the statement that the step was important not only for Zambia but also for the southern African region.
According to him, Zambia has scored several notable achievements in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry that have continued to yield positive outcomes at the national, regional and global level.
Zambia, he said, has also taken bold steps to increase access to ICT across all sections of society.
