A focused agenda for election

October 21, 2007 00:00:00

THE prime objective of the caretaker government remains the holding of national election in accordance with the earlier announced road map to hand over power to the elected government. It is reassuring to note here that General Moeen U. Ahmed, Chief of the Army Staff, has reiterated this in London and New York. His statements to the Bangladeshi members of the media in both the places during the course of his current overseas visit and also to the expatriate Bangladeshis there have been clear and forthright. We all believe that the current caretaker government is steadfastly doing its job to prepare the ground well for holding national election in a free and fair manner.
The first condition for holding free and fair election is to cleanse the electoral process of the influence of black money and muscle power. The drive that the current caretaker government is now carrying out against corruption and goons bears out its hard determination to fulfill this condition. The people have wholeheartedly supported this drive.
In order to accomplish this job well, the government should have a focused agenda. It must concentrate its actions on the 'do-ables' within the time-frame that it has spelt out as its tenure. As such, its priorities do need to match the needs of the time. Otherwise, things might get fouled up. We believe that the government understands this well.
