A national urbanisation policy is needed

November 30, 2008 00:00:00

WHAT happened to the national urbanisation policy the present government said it would finalise? This policy, formulated at the fag end of the tenure of the last elected government, did not see the light, though nearly three years are gone.
According to media reports, the national urbanisation policy was to focus decentralisation of civic amenities such as health, education and infrastructure to ease pressure on the capital. The aim was building a cleaner Dhaka, decentralising everything from transport to health services.
No one knows what is the fate of this important policy? But in the absence of this policy, we are facing environmental pollution. The country is losing agricultural land, open spaces and the environment. In the present context, the need of this policy is felt on an urgent basis as many developers are expanding their businesses to different urban cities, by grabbing the arable land.
