A proper investigation is needed

December 08, 2008 00:00:00

THE deaths of Nurul Islam, president of Ganatantri Party, and his son, as a result of an accidental fire or foul play was tragic. Islam's son died immediately but the man fought on for 36 more hours before surrendering to death. Doctors said that a major part of his body had been burnt in the fire.
How did the fire occur? According to police, until reports by other intelligence and investigating bodies, they suspected an accidental short circuit was the reason that they could tell after on the spot investigation. However, they have not completely discounted sabotage and murder. According to family sources, Islam had been getting threatening phone calls up to the fire incident that killed him and his son.
While, people like Nurul Islam, who stood up for the rights of the downtrodden, are loved and revered by those he supported as well as those who admired him, there would always be people who hated him and wanted him out of the way, or at least, out of the election race. Standing up for the workers sadly is a lip service for many leaders, from those at the top to those at the bottom, but those who know Nurul Islam know that he was a different person.
The tragedy was compounded when the family lost not only the son but the father as well. Who can blame them if they were inconsolable?
I hope that the law enforcers understand that if we wish to pay the right tribute to the fallen leader, then a proper investigation to not only the deaths but also following up the lead to those who threatened Nurul Islam would be the best action. Simultaneously they should also go after those hidden assassins and their masters who would create murder and mayhem before and after the elections, specially in the light of Mumbai and these troubled times.
