Adulterated fuel

October 30, 2007 00:00:00

ACCORDING to newspaper reports some authorised filling stations in and around Dhaka city and other areas of the country are engaged in selling adulterated fuel for higher profits. That's why vehicles, in increasing numbers are, turning up to repair shops with engine troubles.
There is no dependable statistics of the number of vehicles damaged, permanently or temporarily, due to the use of adulterated fuel. But the number is likely to be considerable as the sale of such fuel is reportedly increasing. As a result, the number of vehicles with engine dysfunction rushing to repair garages is on the rise.
In a country where resources are scarce every effort must be made to stop wastage. This shortening of engine life must be seen as a big national economic loss.
The sellers of adulterated fuel can probably act with such impunity or freedom because a section of the concerned rent-seeking officials help them stay out of the reach of the law.
Swift and uncompromising steps against the sale of adulterated fuel are, therefore, needed from the highest level of the administration.
