A.H.M. Moazzem Hossain, who passed away on August 1, 2018, was a towering figure in the realm of economic journalism in Bangladesh. As we commemorate the sixth anniversary of his passing, it is befitting to remember and celebrate his indelible contributions to the industry. The late Hossain was not only an iconic economic journalist but also a man of remarkable character, academic acumen, and outstanding managerial prowess. His dynamic leadership and professional ethos made him a symbol of what a true journalist and entrepreneur should be. I am very lucky to work under the direct supervision of such an idealistic editor for nearly two decades.

In 1993, under the visionary leadership of Hossain, The Financial Express (FE) was launched as the country's first financial English-language daily. The venture began with a paltry investment, but within a short time, it could make its mark in a competitive newspaper industry. The success of the FE in a niche market underscored his exceptional ability to navigate the financial and operational challenges of the newspaper business, setting a new standard for the industry.

As the founder-editor of the Financial Express, Hossain demonstrated an enviable ability to balance journalistic integrity with business acumen. His dual role as the publisher and Managing Director of the International Publications Limited (IPL), the owning company of the FE, further exemplified his multifaceted leadership. Hossain's ability to lead a media organisation to financial success while maintaining editorial independence and excellence was nothing short of a miracle.

Hossain's editorial philosophy was rooted in a deep commitment to journalistic ethics. He was known for his efficient news management, characterized by a simplifying editing mechanism and astute news judgment. Unlike many in the industry, he was adamant about not "killing" objective news items, regardless of their sensitivity. He had a unique talent for publishing even sensitive content using various techniques. This approach not only upheld the objectivity of the news but also ensured that readers received fact-based, unbiased reports and articles.

A staunch advocate for editorial transparency, Hossain was against altering the theme of a report during editing. He believed in editing for clarity and focus, rather than changing the essence of the news. This philosophy was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the truth and his respect for both his readers and his reporters. His editorial practices set a high standard for journalistic ethics and continue to inspire journalists in Bangladesh and beyond.

Hossain's contributions to financial journalism extended beyond his editorial work. His leadership style, marked by kindness, humility, and professionalism, left a lasting impact on all who worked with him. He was not only a mentor to many young journalists but also a respected figure in the broader business community. His ability to connect with people, understand complex economic issues, and present them in an accessible manner made him a beloved and influential figure in the field.

As we remember Mr. Hossain on this solemn occasion, we honour a man who was much more than a journalist. He was a visionary leader, a successful entrepreneur and a symbol of journalistic integrity. His legacy lives on in the FE, in the countless journalists he mentored, and in the high standards he set for economic journalism in Bangladesh. His life and works continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the profound impact that one dedicated individual can have on an industry and a nation.

In commemorating his life, we celebrate the enduring legacy of A.H.M. Moazzem Hossain, a true pioneer and a leading figure in the arena of financial journalism in Bangladesh.
