Call to observe genocide day on May 5

April 14, 2012 00:00:00

Bangladesh has come into being through blood and tears.
The genocide at the famous North Bengal Sugar Mills Ltd at Gopalpur in Natore district is one of the thousands of "My Lai Massacres' in Bangladesh, where my eldest brother Shaheed Lieutenant Anwarul Azim, then General Manager, along with one hundred persons, including labourers, officers, guests and others were killed brutally machine-gunned by the then Pakistan Army on May 5, 1971.
No such genocide has yet occurred anywhere in the world for gaining the independence of a nation in any mill or factory. It is very saddening that our government has not yet taken any initiative to observe this gruesome genocide of May 5th, 1971.
I, on behalf of the Shaheed family, urge upon our democratic government and the authorities concerned to observe this ill-fated day of genocide nationwide in all mills and factories as a grim remembrance of the sacrifice of workers, technicians, management officials of a renowned sugar mill for the freedom of the nation.
