Calling for flood aid

THE government has now, according to reports in the media, decided to issue an official call for foreign assistance to cope with the devastation of the flood. A fortnight ago, the foreign adviser was earlier reported to have told newsmen that Bangladesh would not seek foreign aid, while expressing the hope that its people and government would be able to overcome the adverse conditions arising from the flood.
Now the government, in view of the large-scale devastation caused by the flood, has changed its stance, for understandable reasons. The destructions caused by the flood are enormous and it is not possible on the part of the government to meet the needs of the situation, particularly the medium- and big-term requirements for rehabilitation of the damaged infrastructure. The members of the donor community do need to extend their unstinted support for the purpose. We hope that our development partners would make a positive response to our need in the context of post-flood requirements for flood and other forms of assistance, as was explained to the local consultative group, representing the members of the donor community, at a recent meeting at the Economic Relations Division in Dhaka.
