Checking freestyle construction

THE Dhaka city is expanding from its all sides. It is also getting congested day by day. All these are happening in the absence of proper policy guidelines and strong supervision over construction of high-rise buildings. Many areas in the city have already become congested and, thus, almost unfit for living.
Shantinagar is one of such areas. Being a resident of Shantinagar area, I observed construction of a large number of multi-storied buildings in the area during last few years. Almost all the plots now have multi-storied buildings.
There was none in the past to check the construction of these high-rise buildings in this area. Nor anyone is there at the moment to stop further construction of the same in the locality. Shantinagar is not a very big area to accommodate 100,000 people. But it can be assumed that more than a million people are now living in this congested area. Most of the buildings have been constructed along narrow lanes and by-lanes. The area has already lost sufficient space needed for air circulation and sunlight can hardly enter the area.
So it has now become urgent to check freestyle construction of high-rise buildings not only in this area but also in other parts of the city.
A properly designed city plan becomes all the more necessary to save the capital from ruination and make it truly habitable for people. It is also important to implement the planning through honest and sincere authorities. Because, people have seen what role the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkhya played in recent years.
