Clean candidates

October 10, 2007 00:00:00

IT is highly important to nominate honest and capable candidates for the coming national elections in order to help promote the values and norms of good governance. In the absence of this, it would be business as usual with the future elected government, with the well-being of countrymen remaining as elusive as ever. There will then be every chance for the corrupt persons once again to rule the roost and put on hold the progress of the nation in all respects .
Bangladeshis love democracy and they made great sacrifice for it. But this quest for democracy must not end with only creating conditions for free and fair holding of the election or from a feeling that the institution which would conduct elections have been revamped or reorganised. The triumph of the people will truly make sense when they not only have their rights to franchise in a free and fair polls but also are ensured that they would be casting their votes to select reasonably clean and capable persons. Free and fair elections cannot be an end in itself. It must lead to selection of men and women of high integrity and abilities to work for the public good to make meaningful another probable democratic triumph of the people in the present circumstances.
Thus, the people are looking forward to see a process at work through which only those candidates having a clear track record and also credentials that are not tainted by corruption would be in the electoral race.
