Climate change compensation
July 31, 2009 00:00:00
Several countries, including Bangladesh, to be worst affected by climate change caused by the rich and developed countries, are entitled to compensation. The compensation would not come automatically.
For example, following negotiations Australia piloted a bill in its parliament to admit a large number of environmental refuges from the Maldives. As that island country would sink due to sea level rise, the Maldives also made a similar agreement with Canada. It is, therefore, imperative for Bangladesh to engage in negotiations with European, North American and other countries for the migration of at least 20 million of its citizens likely to become environmental refugees by 2030 due to climate change.
Bangladesh should also work to get the rich and developed countries, specially the USA, to agree to immediately reduce carbon emissions. It should direct its diplomatic initiative to this objective.
The developed countries need to be persuaded to reduce their greenhouse gas emission.
