Compensation packages for judges
August 17, 2009 00:00:00
The salary structure of High Court (HC) judges, and for that matter, all judges in Bangladesh, are so low that, speaking from the point of view of practicality, it is impossible to expect honest and duly diligent deliberations from them in the dispensation of justice.
For example a High Court Judge, as far as we know, gets a salary of Tk. 29,000 per month. A furnished residence is supposed to be provided to them, but which in reality is hard to implement. Judges, therefore, stay in their own residences which in many cases have been handed down to them from family sources. With recent salary hikes, a High Court Judge in Kolkata High Court gets about Rs. 80,000 salary plus other benefits.
Since the news have been floated that 50 new High Court Judges shall be appointed next year, I think the matter of salaries of judges should be examined in detail by your newspaper and reported in the media as a means to secure justice and fairness in society.
An effort in this regard shall surely earn the respect and gratitude of all.
