Crime points in the city

February 19, 2008 00:00:00

NOTWITHSTANDING the self satisfactory statements to the press from the top figures of the government about law and order conditions improving in Dhaka, the real conditions seem to be otherwise. A spate of robberies and burglaries in the city have been reported in newspapers recently.
Newspapers are also reporting about crime points in the city. People passing through these points, specially late at night or in the early morning hours when the traffic is thin, are likely to be accosted by snatchers. Sometimes the snatchers engage in mass snatching of the cash and other valuables of travelling people. They cordon off sections of roads and rob all passengers of various forms of transports stuck in the cordoned off section of the road. Reportedly, those who have to frequently travel on such roads and decent members of the public living near to these roads, many times complained to the concerned authorities for increasing police vigilance at these places of regular crimes. But the law enforcing personnel so far have done little or nothing in response to such pleading for help.
The relevant ministry can no longer take satisfaction from wishful thinking . People's concern with the rising rate of crimes in the city must be dealt with effectively by the ministry.
