Driving institutes needed

March 16, 2008 00:00:00

DRIVING is a potential profession for the lower middle class and the poor at home as well as abroad. Qualified and trained driver can ensure better safety on the roads for the passengers and pedestrians. We did not give due importance to these factors in the past. Trained drivers can go abroad and earn handsome incomes for themselves and their families.
Remittance from them would help their families as well as the economy. The government of Bangladesh has been spending a lot of money for general education and religious education but not so much for technical or professional education. Expatriate Bangladeshis are earning a lot for themselves as well as the country.
They are remitting a huge amount of foreign exchange every year. Many of the country's workers perform menial jobs abroad. Millions of people in Bangladesh are either unemployed or under-employed. It is an acute problem in Bangladesh. Many of them can be trained as drivers and sent to foreign countries to earn their bread. It would increase remittance.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Technical Education Board and Manpower Ministry should establish a few driving institutes in every city to train people in driving and provide the licenses to the trained. It would benefit thousands of poor in the country as they would be able to work either at home or abroad.
The government should establish 20-30 driving institutes in different cities to help the poor make a decent living. They can expect it from the government.
